When investigators entered the Safonov residence, they were met with a scene straight out of a fairy tale of splendor: stucco, coffers, crystal chandeliers, paintings and sculptures.

However, it was the golden toilet bowls that became the symbol of his downfall. In Russia, where the unwritten rule was "steal according to rank," such opulence in the residence of a traffic police colonel was too flagrant. Instead of inspiring his subordinates to honest work, Safonov turned them into an organized criminal group that ruthlessly robbed drivers.

Under Safonov, traffic police sold special stickers for windows that acted as immunity. Truck drivers, paying from 300 to 500 złoty, could avoid road checks for a month. Those who did not buy "vignettes" were subjected to detailed checks that could end in serious trouble. In this way, Safonov and his men raked in 1.5 million złoty, although the property found in his possession was valued at ten times more.

Safonov was sentenced to 20 years of hard labor, loss of officer rank, and a fine of 7.5 million zlotys. Despite this, the former head of the traffic police does not admit guilt and announces an appeal.

“Everything is happening according to the will of the Almighty,” he told reporters after the verdict was announced, smiling calmly.
