This exhibition will be the highlight of the autumn in Europe. 270 works by Gerhard Richter
The years 1987–1995, which will be covered in the next section, saw Richter create perhaps his most somber and striking abstract compositions. It was also during this period that he created the work "October 18, 1977"—the only work by the German artist that directly addresses the recent history of his homeland.
The next section covers the years from 1996 to 2009. This period saw the creation of small abstract and figurative paintings, as well as the series "Cage's Paintings," a tribute to the avant-garde composer John Cage.
The final two galleries will cover his final years, extending to 2023. During this time, Richter temporarily abandoned painting to focus on sculpture and his famous digitally generated abstract compositions of colored stripes. Afterward, the artist returned to painting, creating the "Birkenau" series and continuing to experiment with abstraction.
The retrospective exhibition of Gerhard Richter's work at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris will run until March 2, 2026.
