Trump may change his mind about funding for Ukraine. He was said to have lost patience.

US President Donald Trump may give more money to defending Ukraine for the first time since his inauguration, US media report. The Republican politician was said to have toughened his stance on Russia following recent drone and missile attacks on civilian targets.

President Trump is considering increasing funding for Ukraine for the first time since taking office in January, CBS News reported, citing "multiple diplomatic sources."

The station's anonymous interlocutors indicated that the new funding may be aimed at sending a signal to Russia , which has attacked Ukraine with drones and missiles in recent days.

War in Ukraine. Record Russian attack. Trump irritated.

This week, Russia carried out what Ukraine called its largest drone strike since the launch of a full-scale invasion in February 2022 —the latest in a wave of airstrikes that have hit Kyiv and other cities. This has irked Trump, who has admitted he is "dissatisfied" with Vladimir Putin's stance.

Trump suggested earlier this week that he planned to send Ukraine more defensive weapons , following the aforementioned airstrikes on cities and other civilian targets.

Just days earlier, his administration had halted arms shipments —a move that one White House official described as part of a broader global review of arms transfers. This sparked an uproar in the United States, the European Union, and Ukraine itself.

The source of any new funding for Ukraine is unclear. However, U.S. officials told CBS News that Trump has $3.85 billion in remaining Biden-era presidential spending reduction authority at his disposal, which could be used to send U.S. military equipment to Ukraine .

Former officials told reporters that the president has the authority to seize about $5 billion in Russian foreign assets and direct the funds to Ukraine, though neither he nor former President Joe Biden has exercised that authority.

War in Ukraine. Will NATO officially support Kyiv?

In a Thursday interview with NBC News, President Donald Trump suggested that NATO would buy weapons from the US to transfer to Ukraine .

This would mean a radical change of policy , because in the past NATO as an institution has not directly armed Ukraine, a country that is not a member of the Alliance.

Instead, individual alliance members have chosen to support Ukraine independently. "We send weapons to NATO, and NATO pays for those weapons 100 percent," Trump told NBC News' Kristen Welker.
