The construction of the facility is part of a larger, long-term plan to modernize the local transport infrastructure. It also includes the construction of new fast rail connections (local and long-distance), bus connections, as well as infrastructure for taxis, cyclists and pedestrians.
According to Zaha Hadid Architects, once the new terminal is put into operation, Vilnius Airport will be able to handle up to 10.6 million passengers per year. The construction of the facility is to be completed in 2028.
Vilnius: New airport terminalWhen designing the terminal, the architects drew inspiration from Lithuania's cultural heritage. Both the terminal's shape and the structural elements and the shape of the skylights in the ceiling use a rhombus motif - a shape that is often repeated in the traditional art of this country.

The designers were also inspired by the traditional art of creating straw ornaments called sodai, which is on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Lithuanians call these intricate and incredibly delicate structures "hanging orchards."
One of the most important building materials for the new arrivals terminal at Vilnius Airport will be locally sourced wood. This raw material is increasingly used in contemporary architecture, including in the design of large-scale facilities such as airports.
