A unique collection of 30 Renaissance maps based on the 2nd-century treatise "Geography" by Claudius Ptolemy will be on display in the Baroque interiors of the Palace of the Commonwealth in Warsaw from July 19 to August 10, the National Library announced on Thursday on its Facebook page.
As explained, the manuscripts presented were created in the second half of the 15th century based on the instructions contained in the ancient work "Geographike hyphegesis" ("Introduction to Mapmaking"), in which Ptolemy – a mathematician, astronomer and geographer from Alexandria – included descriptions of the regions of the world known at that time and the methods of their cartographic representation.
It was recalled that one of the most important creators of Ptolemaic maps was Nicolaus Germanus, an Italian-based author of luxurious, illuminated manuscripts containing, among others, a map of the Ecumene – the entire known world at that time – and 29 detailed maps of Europe, Asia and Africa.
"One of these priceless copies, dedicated to Pope Paul II, most likely came to Poland as a gift for Jan Zamoyski. It survived the turmoil of war and today is in the collections of the National Library as part of the purchased Library of the Zamoyski Estate," we read in the exhibition announcement.
Admission to the exhibition is free.
The Palace of the Commonwealth is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (PAP)
