An expressway will be built for billions. Drivers will drive under water

An expressway will be built for billions. Drivers will drive under water
  • - For the Police-Goleniów section, due to the need to drill a 5 km long tunnel under the Odra, the deadline for construction works will be significantly longer than for standard road sections. Therefore, we plan to complete the works in 2033 - explains the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways.
  • The GDDKiA branch in Szczecin reminds that in May it became familiar with the contractors’ proposals for the construction of the remaining two sections of the Western Bypass of Szczecin, i.e. Kołbaskowo-Dołuje and Dołuje-Police.
  • Between Goleniów and Police, the S6 will be built, over 23 km long. The entire route will complete the ring around the capital of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, which will significantly improve the connection of the entire Szczecin agglomeration with the expressway network.

The Western Bypass of Szczecin along the S6 expressway is divided into three sections:

  • Police-Goleniow,
  • Kołbaskowo-Dółuje,
  • Doluje-Police.

Tender procedures started in December 2024. The opening of offers for the route between Kołbaskowo and Police took place in May this year.

A little earlier, in March, GDDKiA obtained decisions on the permit for the implementation of a road investment (ZRID) for all three sections of ZOS. Compensation procedures for real estate necessary for the construction of the road are underway.

From nearly PLN 5 billion to over PLN 8.5 billion. Over 1,380 questions from companies

Now we have learned about the offers for the implementation of the most difficult one, because it includes, among other things, the construction of a 5-kilometer tunnel under the Oder, i.e. Police-Goleniów. Five of them were submitted.

The cheapest bid, amounting to PLN 4.92 billion, was submitted by CCS Claims Consulting Samson Zbigniew Szymczak. In turn, according to the consortium consisting of Mirbud SA and Samsung C&T Corporation, the investment requires expenditures exceeding PLN 8.5 billion and this was the highest bid. The full list of price proposals is provided below the article.

The interest of companies was very high, with over 1,380 questions received from contractors.

- informs the Szczecin branch of GDDKiA.

The next stage is the examination and verification of bids. The criteria for evaluating bids are 60% price, the remaining 40%. This consists of extending the warranty period for tunnel equipment (20%), bridge structures (10%) and retaining structures (10%). The deadline for completing the procedures also depends on whether bidders exercise their right to appeal to the National Chamber of Appeal.

The contractor's task is not only to build, but also to design. The end is not until 2033.

The entity with which the general directorate will sign the contract will be responsible for developing executive designs and carrying out construction works.

- For the Police-Goleniów section, due to the need to drill a 5 km long tunnel under the Odra, the deadline for construction works will be significantly longer than for standard road sections. Therefore , we plan to complete the works in 2033. Earlier, at the turn of 2028 and 2029, drivers will be able to use the Kołbaskowo-Dołuje and Dołuje-Police sections - GDDKiA enumerates.

Between Police and Goleniów, the S6 expressway will be 23.4 km long, including 5 km of the road tunnel under the Odra, located north of Police . Each of the two carriageways of the route will be routed through a separate tunnel bored with a TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine).

Drivers will drive on a road built 45 m below ground level

The external diameter of the tunnel is to be almost 15 m, and the thickness of the casing is 60 cm. It is planned to have 19 cross passages between the naves, which will primarily serve for evacuation in dangerous situations. The bottom of the tunnel structure will descend to a maximum of 51 m below ground level, while the roadway will be led at a depth of up to 45 m. The entrance sections to the tunnel will be about 600 m long.

- The investment will also include the construction of two road junctions and the expansion of one, the construction of 22 bridge structures, including as many as 8 over watercourses. Their abutments will be spaced more widely to provide adequate space along the stream for animal crossings. Two large upper animal crossings and a pair of Service Areas between the Modrzewie and Goleniów Północ junctions will also be built - lists the GDDKiA branch in Szczecin.

The S6 expressway completes the ring around the capital of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship

ZOS is to relieve the current route of A6, S3 and S6 bypassing Szczecin from the south and east . Traffic intensity there is very high, especially in summer, which causes slowdowns and traffic jams. The new S6 will close the ring around the capital of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, which will significantly improve the connection of the entire Szczecin agglomeration with the expressway network.

The investment will be of particular importance for Police, located north of Szczecin. Currently, to get from Police to the Goleniów Północ junction (S3/S6) on the other side of the Odra, you have to drive 58 km. After the bypass is built, this route will be shortened to 23 km, and the travel time will be reduced several times. A significant part of the car traffic will be moved out of the center of Szczecin, including vehicles going to the chemical plant in Police.
