How many hours does it take to turn an average Joe into a soldier? Experts give the minimum

- According to the Ministry of National Defense's announcement, a pilot program for general defense training is to be launched this year.
- - We want the pilot program to be launched this year, so that next year the training can start in full swing from January 1, and by 2027 we will have, let's say, 100,000 people trained annually - announced Deputy Minister Cezary Tomczyk.
- Details about the training will be presented soon, but they are already attracting interest from experts
In an interview with TVN24, Deputy Minister of National Defence Cezary Tomczyk was asked about the work on voluntary universal military training, which was announced by Prime Minister Donald Tusk in March this year.
" In accordance with the Prime Minister's wishes and the decision made at the Council of Ministers, this model was developed by the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces. Within the next two, or at most three weeks, this program of general defense training, including that related to civil defense, will be publicly presented. Every Pole will be able to sign up and undergo such training ," Tomczyk replied on TVN24.
He also stated that for the Ministry of National Defence, universal defence training is one of the priorities.
- We want the pilot program to be launched this year, so that next year the training can start in full swing from January 1, and by 2027 we will have a scale of, say, 100,000 people trained annually - he emphasized.
At the same time, the Deputy Minister of National Defense reminded that, alongside the planned program, voluntary compulsory military service is still in operation, under which 20,000-40,000 people are trained annually.
There are also programs such as Holidays with the Army, Train with the Army, Academic Legion, and other forms of preparatory classes. Furthermore, the Deputy Minister explained that any company, and the Ministry of National Defense itself, will be able to register a group of employees for joint training.
Training in Practice: An Expert Has DoubtsIn an interview with Onet, Reserve Colonel Piotr Lewandowski wondered what the ministry wants to achieve with this training and how much time it would take to turn an average person into "someone resembling a soldier."
At the same time, he explained that acquiring basic military skills requires a minimum of 100 hours of intensive training. According to the military officer, the first priority should be relatively young people, aged 27 to 35.
"Perhaps politicians are afraid to set an age limit of 27-35 because they fear accusations that they are depriving the rest of society of such important training and, in a sense, abandoning older people to their fate," said Reserve Colonel Piotr Lewandowski in an interview with Onet. While older age groups should not be forgotten, in this particular case, the training should be more focused on civil defense.
Furthermore, the expert explained to Onet that an average Joe, over fifty, overweight and with underlying health conditions, would fail during intense training. Therefore, according to Lewandowski, the civilian training project carries many risks, but on the other hand, it's still difficult to assess them because so little is known about it at the moment.
