Is it worth sleeping in socks? Scientists have the answer

Many people believe that feet should “breathe” at night after wearing socks all day. Others, however, believe that sleeping without them can cause colds and affect the quality of sleep. Who is right in the “sock dispute”?

Why is it worth sleeping with socks on?

The results of the study were published in the journal National Library of Medicine. They show that men who slept in socks fell asleep faster by an average of 8 minutes, enjoying a longer sleep by 32 minutes.

Warming your feet opens up your blood vessels, which helps cool the rest of your body , Michelle Drerup, who led the research team, told CNN.

The researcher notes that in the evening, our body temperature drops by an average of 1-2 degrees Celsius, which helps us prepare for sleep. However, when we put on socks, we support blood circulation in the body, which helps with proper thermoregulation.

Scientists confident? Not necessarily

Scientists point out, however, that despite scientific evidence of the health-promoting effect of wearing socks to sleep on the quality of our rest, this guideline cannot be taken for granted. Researchers note that each body may function slightly differently. Some people, especially on warmer days, may experience excessive foot sweating when sleeping in socks, which can cause discomfort and problems falling asleep.

Much also depends on individual preferences. If we have slept without socks for many years, putting them on may be a certain anomaly for us, which will affect the quality of our sleep. Experts recommend that we approach the topic of sleeping in socks individually and not be afraid of experimenting. They do not rule out that not everyone may feel the benefits of putting socks on to sleep.
