Preliminary test results for a patient suspected of having cholera in Stargard are available.

GIS: there is no cholera in Stargard after all

"The preliminary results we have indicate that this is not a toxin-producing strain. It is definitely not cholera; the final results will be confirmed on Monday," said Marek Waszczewski, spokesman for the Chief Sanitary Inspector.

On Saturday, a patient from the hospital in Stargard was admitted to the provincial hospital in Szczecin with suspected cholera.

A case of cholera in an elderly woman in Stargard was confirmed by two independent laboratories . Health authorities are investigating the source of the illness. Neither the patient nor any of her family members had traveled abroad. The condition of the patient suspected of having cholera is described as stable.

- The patient is responding well to treatment - said Tomasz Owsik-Kozłowski, spokesman for the Independent Public Provincial Hospital in Szczecin.

A total of 26 people who had contact with the patient were in quarantine. Fourteen of them completed their quarantine on Wednesday, and the remaining individuals completed their quarantine on Friday.

"The last group has completed their quarantine. No one reported any symptoms or deterioration in their health until the quarantine ended," said Paweł Mayko from the Provincial Sanitary and Epidemiological Station in Szczecin.

The last case of cholera in Poland was recorded in 2019 in Świnoujście.

Cholera is a highly contagious disease caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacterium . It spreads epidemically through water contaminated by patients and carriers. Its main symptoms are acute, watery diarrhea and vomiting, leading to dehydration. Without appropriate treatment, it can quickly lead to death. The disease is treated with antibiotics.
