This chain store is a model of sustainable development? New report leaves no illusions

The latest report, "2025 Fossil Free Fashion Scorecard," presents surprising results on the environmental performance of leading fashion brands. The study included 42 global brands, assessing them in five key areas related to environmental protection.
The biggest surprise is the leader's position - the H&M chain, which, despite operating in the fast fashion sector, received the highest rating (B+) for the second year in a row. The company stands out particularly in the area of renewable energy investments and supporting suppliers in the decarbonization process.
Luxury can also be ecoAmong luxury brands, Kering (owner of Gucci and Balenciaga, among others) fares best, taking third place overall. The group has committed to an ambitious goal of reducing energy consumption by 70% among strategic suppliers.
Sustainable Fashion - Disturbing StatisticsThe report reveals that only a third of the brands surveyed managed to reduce their emissions by more than 10 percent compared to the previous year. A positive trend, however, is the increase in the number of companies using renewable energy sources - from 5 to 12 brands in a year.
Shein - the black sheep of the fashion industryAt the other end of the spectrum is Shein, receiving an F in four out of five categories. According to the report, if the company were a country, it would be among the world’s 100 largest polluters, generating emissions comparable to the entire Lebanon.
The future of the fashion industryThe report highlights the urgent need for transformation in the fashion industry, which accounts for around 4% of global emissions. A positive sign is that 95% of the companies surveyed already offer services that are in line with circular fashion principles, such as resale or repair of products.
