The authorities assumed the festival would be an opportunity to demonstrate the superiority of communism over capitalism, a goal that the party and the Polish Youth Union were supposed to achieve together. They were mistaken. Students from Warsaw and across the country failed to convince their guests to accept the regime imposed by Moscow, but they absorbed everything that brought 30,000 young people like themselves to the Vistula River, who, ten years after the war, wanted to live a normal life.
