Excessive consumption of ultra-processed food can have a negative impact on the body and mind, warned Małgorzata Słoma-Krześlak, a dietitian from the Silesian Medical University and a doctor of health sciences.
Ultra-processed foods are characterized by the presence of ingredients not typically used in home cooking: emulsifiers, flavor enhancers, and artificial colors. They undergo multiple processing stages during production.
As indicated in a press release by the press office of the Silesian Medical University, this includes chips and sweetened carbonated drinks, as well as ready-made meals and products seemingly perceived as healthy, such as protein bars.
"In the era of easy access to quick meals and instant snacks, more and more studies indicate that ultra-processed food (UPF) may have a disturbing effect not only on our body, but also on our mind," said Małgorzata Słoma-Krześlak.
She explained that diet has a direct impact on the gut microbiota, which affects the nervous system. Ultra-processed foods promote inflammation, disrupt the balance of gut bacteria, and affect the dopaminergic system, which regulates pleasure and motivation.
"All of this can exacerbate symptoms of depression and anxiety. Epidemiological studies have shown that a 10% increase in UPF in the diet can be associated with an 11% higher risk of depression," the dietitian noted.
Ultra-processed foods can negatively impact concentration, spatial orientation, and logical thinking, as well as sleep quality. The Silesian Medical University has indicated that excessive consumption, especially in children and adolescents, can contribute to eating disorders.
"Although ultra-processed food is widely available and tastes good, too much of it can negatively impact our brain, sleep, and mental health," emphasized Małgorzata Słoma-Krześlak.
She added that even small changes in daily diet – without extreme restrictions, but with greater awareness of food – can improve the quality of life. (PAP)
