'Surreal' Scenes at ATP Tournament: Here's Why They Interrupted Match
The Movistar Chile Open is an ATP 250 tournament currently taking place in Santiago, Chile. However, it has encountered unexpected difficulties. It is all due to a massive power outage in Chile, which has left 90 percent of the country's population without electricity.
The power outage caused massive traffic chaos. Traffic lights stopped working and thousands of people were stuck in the subway.
"I am declaring a state of emergency due to the disaster and ordering a curfew from 10pm on Tuesday to 6am on Wednesday," the country's president, Gabriel Boric, ordered.
ATP matches in Santiago set to resume on WednesdayThis turbulence has of course also affected sports. The tennis match Federico Coria vs. Tomas Barrios was interrupted after the first set.
"Completely surreal scenes in Santiago. After a nationwide power outage that left 14 of the country's 16 regions in darkness, the government has imposed a total curfew from 10pm to 6am. The Barrios-Coria match was suspended after the 1st set. Police arrived to evict the entire area..." wrote one user on X.
Matches are scheduled to resume on Wednesday.
