Lewandowski's difficult time in the Champions League. This is how the Spaniards assessed him.

Lewandowski's difficult time in the Champions League. This is how the Spaniards assessed him.

Lewandowski has been struggling with injury since the start of this season, so he's been slow to break into the Barcelona lineup. In the last league match, he came off the bench and scored twice against Valencia, so Hansi Flick decided to give the Pole a chance to start against Newcastle.

The 37-year-old, who also scored for Poland against Finland in the World Cup qualifiers, struggled to play against the Magpies' tough defense. According to Spanish media, the Polish captain only had 21 touches, taking three shots.

"He was closely guarded, at times very aggressively. He didn't create a single opportunity to score a goal," wrote the Catalan newspaper "Sport", deeming him the weakest player in the Barcelona team.

"Mundo Deportivo" was slightly less critical of his attitude, but it is still hard to call it a positive review.

"He cleverly passed several balls from outside the penalty area, relieving the team by taking on the opponents. However, he had no scoring opportunities, and his crosses failed to reach Rashford and Raphinha," we read.

In turn, the "Goal.com" portal was more understanding, but still rated Lewandowski the worst of all the Spanish champions' players.

"His fight, commitment, and effort should be appreciated. You could see he was trying, but this time he was unlucky. It was his first match in the starting lineup after injury, which was noticeable," the report said.

Barcelona won 2-1 thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford. Lewandowski played until the 69th minute. Wojciech Szczęsny sat out the match on the bench.
