Magda Linette defeated the lower-ranked Italian tennis player Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6:4, 6:0 and advanced to the second round (1/18 finals) of the WTA 500 tournament on hard courts in Merida, Mexico (prize pool: 1.1 million dollars). The Pole will fight for the quarterfinals on Wednesday against the Turkish Zeynep Sonmez.
This was the third match between the currently 37th-ranked tennis player in the world and her opponent, who is nine years younger and 34 positions lower, and the second victory for the 33-year-old Poznań player.

On Wednesday at 5:00 PM Polish time, Linette will face - for the first time - the not-so-23-year-old Sonmez, with a quarterfinal at stake. The 88th-ranked Turkish player eliminated the eighth-seeded Greek Maria Sakkari in the first round, winning 7-5, 6-2.
Earlier, Magdalena Fręch, playing in the "seventh" position, was eliminated, losing to Elina Awanesjan from Armenia 6:4, 3:6, 3:6.
