The European Women's Football Championship has started. Victories for Finland and Norway
Finland beat Iceland 1-0 in Thun to open the European Women's Football Championship, hosted by Switzerland. In the second Group A match, the host team lost 2-1 to Norway in Basel. Poland will play its first match on Friday against Germany.
The winning goal for the Finns was scored by playmaker Katariina Kosola in the 70th minute, after having missed three good chances to change the score.

Iceland were reduced to 10 players in the 58th minute when midfielder Hildur Antonsdottir received a second yellow card for a dangerous foul. Both teams are winless in the previous two Euros.
In the second match on Wednesday, Switzerland took the lead after less than two quarters of play. In the chaos in the Norwegian penalty area, Nadine Riesen (28th minute) showed the best reflexes. After her flat shot, the ball bounced off the post and into the net. The Scandinavians equalized shortly after the break. Ada Hegerberg (54th) successfully headed a corner kick. The winner of the Golden Ball (2018) later missed a penalty kick. The Helvetians did not recover well from conceding a goal, and they were already losing 1:2. After a counterattack by their opponents, Julia Stierli unfortunately headed the ball into her own goal.
Group A has no clear favourite and is considered the most evenly matched group in the tournament, which will feature 16 teams.
The Polish national team will play its first match in St. Gallen on Friday against the Germans, who have won the European Championship eight times. They last won the title in 2013. In Group C, the Polish team, led by Nina Patalon, will also face the Swedes and the Danes.
