Diogo Jota and his brother died while driving a car in northwestern Spain. Unfortunately, both died in an accident - when paramedics arrived, the car was engulfed in flames and despite immediate rescue operations, the men could not be saved.

The entire world of football came to a standstill, and voices filled with sadness, disbelief and support for the deceased's loved ones began to emerge from all sides. Support was expressed by Cristiano Ronaldo, Juergen Klopp, many football clubs and Diogo Jota's teammates. In memory of the player, Liverpool retired the number 20, withdrew shirts with his name from sale and lowered flags to half-mast.

Additionally, it was decided that the upcoming matches of the current European Women's Championship will be preceded by a minute of silence. On Thursday, the Portuguese national team played its match against Spain.

The silence before the match was eerie, with tears in the stands and fans holding black-and-white photos of the tragically deceased player, as well as shirts with his name on them.

The Portuguese team was unable to compete with their rivals, ultimately losing 0:5.

Diogo Jota has died at the age of 28. During his career, he played for Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers, among others. He also made 49 appearances for the senior Portuguese national team.
