The competition, part of the Omnium Banque Nationale, has a rotating location. Each season, the host changes between Montreal and Toronto. Last year, Jessica Pegula emerged victorious in the latter city. Furthermore, the American has triumphed in the last two editions.

This season, three Polish players are competing in the event. All were seeded, giving them a bye in the first round: Iga Świątek, seeded 2nd, Magdalena Fręch, seeded 21st, and Magda Linette, seeded 25th.

World ranking leader Aryna Sabalenka, meanwhile, is absent from Montreal. The Belarusian cited "fatigue" as her reasoning.

The highest-ranked player in the Omnium Banque Nationale is Coco Gauff, followed by Świątek and Pegula.

The Canadian "thousanders" also include names such as Mirra Andreyeva, Amanda Anisimova, Madison Keys, Jasmine Paolini, Emma Navarro, Yelena Rybakina and Elena Svitolina.

Eugenie Bouchard, meanwhile, is ending her career at the tournament in Montreal. Formerly ranked fifth in the world, she was a Wimbledon finalist, a semifinalist at the Australian Open, and a finalist at Roland Garros. However, injuries significantly hampered her development.
