António Baptista Pires is the PSD candidate for the Mealhada City Council

The president of the Municipal Political Commission of the Social Democrats of Mealhada, António Baptista Pires, confirmed today that he will run for the leadership of the Municipal Council of this municipality in the district of Aveiro in this year's local elections.
"I decided to accept the proposal presented by the PSD Mealhada Political Commission and approved by the Aveiro District Commission because I am sensitive to the appeals of the militants. In contacts with the population and institutions of the municipality, which I have listened to with great concern since I took office as president in June 2024, they have expressed to me, on the part of the current executive, the lack of support and greater attention for their social projects and community support", he highlighted.
António Baptista Pires, 55 years old, born in Pampilhosa (Mealhada municipality), has a degree in Science and a professional background linked to the business sector, as administrative and financial director and director of management and cost control in several companies.
The choice of the manager to enter the local government race was unanimously approved by the PSD Municipal Political Commission in Mealhada, a month and a half after the leader of the Municipal Council, António Jorge Franco, announced his re-candidacy.
“In the view of PSD Mealhada [the re-election of António Jorge Franco] is synonymous with the continuation of the policy of stagnation and lack of development of the region, of the municipality. The project headed by António Baptista Pires represents capacity, competence and a high sense of responsibility, as the municipality of Mealhada needs and demands”, he maintained.
If elected, the PSD list headed by António Baptista Pires intends to “implement new dynamics, both in terms of current management and investment strategy”.
“There has been a waste of the region’s capacity, whether in terms of tourism, industry or housing. We belong to the Central Region, we are on the coast, with good access to road and rail transport, which quickly put us in the north, south or on the border with Spain, a few kilometres from the port of Aveiro and Figueira da Foz, which during decades of socialist government have failed to take advantage of and create value”, he said.
In addition to António Baptista Pires (PSD), António Jorge Franco, for the Independent Movement More and Better, and Guilherme Duarte, for the PS, also announced that they will vote in this year's local elections.
António Jorge Franco was elected mayor of Mealhada in 2021, by the Independent Movement More and Better with 37.82% of the votes, while the PS collected 29.54%, the Coalition Together for the Municipality of Mealhada 19.20%, the CDU 4.27%, the BE 3.10% and Chega 1.58%.
The executive of the Mealhada Council is made up of three elected members of the Independent Movement More and Better, three from the PS and one from the Coalition Together for the Municipality of Mealhada.
