BE, PAN and Livre run in coalition for Cascais City Council

BE, PAN and Livre run in coalition for Cascais City Council

It is one of the first left-wing coalitions for the local elections. In Cascais, the Left Bloc, PAN and Livre reached a coalition agreement for the candidacy for local government bodies.

According to Renascença , the Left Bloc will indicate the candidate for the Chamber, Livre will have the first place on the list for the Municipal Assembly and PAN will lead the list for two of the four parish assemblies.

The Bloco candidate Alexandre Abreu is once again the head of the list for the Cascais Council, now for the coalition that also includes Livre and PAN.

In statements to Renascença , the economist and professor at ISEG guarantees that this alliance is, above all, a convergence of policies to be an alternative to the current coalition of PSD and CDS that has governed the municipality for several years.

“It is not just a convenient arrangement with the aim of adding more votes, it is really a desire to work together, to seek convergence in terms of political proposals, to be stronger, and hopefully even to ensure that in these elections a change of direction is possible and that it is not the PSD and CDS that continue to free up the destinies of the municipality”, says Alexandre Abreu.

The three parties, which currently have no representation in the municipal executive, say that this coalition seeks to establish itself “as a unifying pole of the democratic, ecological and progressive field in Cascais”.

The coalition’s main priorities are “increasing the supply of affordable housing and ensuring free, fast and quality public transport for everyone who lives or works in Cascais”.

Local elections. Government sets elections for October 12

The coalition also wants to stop what it calls environmental attacks by the current administration, such as the “destruction of Quinta dos Ingleses or the expansion of air traffic at Cascais Municipal Aerodrome”.

Alexandre Abreu believes that the coalition has a chance of achieving a good result because, in the municipality, the right is fragmented, with several candidates running in the elections on October 12.

“If you notice, on the right we currently have not only two putative candidates from the Chega camp, the candidate from the Liberal Initiative, the candidate from the PSD-CDS coalition and also João Maria Jonet. On the left, and on the progressive-ecologist side, what we want to convey is an image of unity, of convergence”, says the Bloco member.

The coalition candidate for Cascais City Council reveals that the PCP was also contacted to join this agreement, but declined the invitation.

“In fact, at the beginning we tried to ensure that the convergence was as broad as possible, we actively made these contacts, the invitation was declined, it was not possible to move forward, but we are very satisfied with this coalition configuration”, says the candidate.

The presentation of the coalition is scheduled for July 20 and will include the leaders of the three parties: Inês de Sousa Real, Mariana Mortágua and Rui Tavares.

The coalition wants to mark the pre-election campaign with several conversations that will include the participation of the conductor António Victorino D'Almeida, the anti-corruption activist João Paulo Batalha, the lawyer Ricardo Sá Fernandes, the musician Rao Kyao, the former director of the Lisbon Botanical Garden Fernando Catarino, the biologist Luís Cancela da Fonseca and the president of the National Association of Family Health Units, André Biscaia.
