Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences opens Building II tomorrow

Building II of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra (FPCEUC), located on the slope of São Jerónimo, close to the College of Arts, will be inaugurated tomorrow at 12:00. The University of Coimbra (UC) reported having invested more than two million euros in the renovation works of the building, which began to be built in 1927 and housed the laundry and workshops of the old university hospital before being used, from the 1990s onwards, for teaching and research activities at the UC (it also housed a university canteen/restaurant on the lower floors). The facility, which has undergone “extensive renovation work”, includes classrooms, offices, research laboratories, an auditorium and a bar and is now fully dedicated to the FPCEUC and its Research Centre for Neuropsychology and Cognitive-Behavioural Intervention (CINEICC). According to a note released by UC, the intervention, in an area of 2,023 m2, consisted of the «repair, conservation and adaptation of the interior spaces of the five floors of the building, respecting (whenever possible) the original construction, but creating internal circulation areas, by stairs and elevator, and accessibility solutions that make the building 100% accessible to people with reduced mobility». «In addition to the rehabilitation of facades, frames and roof, exterior areas for main access (including sidewalk) and leisure (terrace-balcony over Rua Padre António Vieira) were created», it explained.
The inauguration ceremony will include speeches by the UC vice-rector for Heritage, Buildings and Tourism, Alfredo Dias, the scientific coordinator of CINEICC, Daniel Rijo, the deputy director of FPCEUC, António Gomes Ferreira, the director of FPCEUC, Maria Paula Paixão, and the rector of the University of Coimbra, Amílcar Falcão.
