The mother, an 18-year-old woman, stated she was unaware she was pregnant. Her parents, the baby's grandparents, also stated they were unaware. They were the ones who discovered the horrific scene at home and raised the alarm.

For now, the gestation period is not even known—this is because the young woman claims she was unaware she was pregnant. If she did, she hid it from everyone. It appears this was not an induced abortion—the fetus shows no physical injuries. It was likely a birth that occurred in the home, but what happened at that moment is unclear. An initial analysis of the baby's body indicates it was born late in the pregnancy.

The child's mother has not yet been formally interviewed by Judiciary inspectors, as she is still hospitalized at Braga Hospital. Before being hospitalized, she was rescued by Vila Verde firefighters at the house where her son died. The young girl lived at home with her mother and father, a firefighter. The Vila Verde Republican Guard (GNR) was called to the scene, but as the circumstances of the baby's death were unclear, the PJ (Public Justice) was called in and took over the investigation.
