Lipor records increase in recycling and waste recovery in 2024

In 2024, Lipor achieved a significant milestone in waste management, receiving around 69,479 tonnes of materials for multi-material recycling, including paper/cardboard, plastic, metal and glass.
This volume, coming from door-to-door selective collection, proximity with restricted access, as well as from Ecopoints and Ecocentres, represents a growth of 2.1% compared to 2023.
Lipor's Sorting Units and Platforms received 17,566 tonnes of packaging, an increase of 4.4% compared to the previous year. Paper and cardboard stood out with 25,268 tonnes collected, reflecting a growth of 2.3%, while glass contributed with 23,426 tonnes.
This positive performance is the result of the strong commitment of Lipor's eight Associated Municipalities to selective collection. Notably, the amount of biowaste collected selectively in the residential sector also grew, totaling 55,377 tons, which corresponds to an increase of 6.7% compared to 2023.
In terms of waste production, residents recorded an increase of 1.4%, equivalent to an additional 5,294 tonnes. Lipor sent 356,866 tonnes of waste for Energy Recovery, enabling the export of 151,124 MWh of electricity to the EDP national grid. Only 22,908 tonnes of waste were deposited in landfill, representing just 4.3% of the total produced in the eight associated municipalities.
LIPOR products have demonstrated positive environmental performance, with recyclable materials, organic compost, Nutrimais® substrates and exported electricity contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by around 104,000 tCO2e. This impact is equivalent to the emissions associated with the annual circulation of 40,000 cars.
Lipor states that its commitment to the circular economy, innovation, prevention, reuse, recycling and energy recovery remains firm, with an emphasis on decarbonisation and investment in increasingly modern systems and infrastructures for waste management. The collaboration of citizens has been fundamental to the success of these initiatives, it adds.
