Postponed twice and remade: 'Elio' debuts very different from the original idea

Postponed twice and remade: 'Elio' debuts very different from the original idea

Comic relief has become the main antagonist. Lord Grigon, who seemed like just a funny character in the first trailer, becomes a planet-conquering villain. Glorgon, Grigon's son, is the one who gets the comic part.

While the first version had a touch of horror and science fiction, the second seeks a more familiar and even childish tone. For Brad Garret, Lord Grigon's voice actor, children will identify with the protagonist. "I think when we go through childhood, a lot of us feel like we don't fit in. I certainly did. In fact, I don't think I fit in now," he said laughing in an interview with Splash .

It's something that all kids can relate to, because being young is really hard. I really related to Elio, but they said at Pixar, 'Brad, we don't care who you relate to. You're playing the giant.' And I just said, okay, I need the paycheck, you know. Brad Garrett

All of the changes, in fact, were made with the intention of making the audience connect with Elio. Pete Docter, Pixar's creative director, highlighted in an interview with The Wrap that this was an important role for the new directors.

If "Inside Out 2," for example, is about anxiety, in "Elio" we talk about feeling alone in a world full of people. "And that's really the essence of the movie, and that's what I'm really excited about, because I think the movie has the potential to really speak to audiences who are going through that, as many of us are right now," Docter says.
