President Donald Trump said on Monday that sweeping U.S. tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico “will indeed be implemented,” according to Reuters.
“The tariffs are moving forward on schedule,” Trump said when asked at a White House press conference whether the delayed tariffs on the two U.S. trading partners would go back into effect soon. “So the tariffs will continue, yes, and we will gain a lot of territory,” Trump said.
On February 1, Trump signed executive orders imposing 25 percent tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, as well as 10 percent levies on Canadian energy. The president, who has praised the use of tariffs as a negotiating tool and source of revenue, based the orders on alleged failures by Mexico and Canada to prevent crime and drug trafficking on their respective borders with the United States.
But Trump suspended the new tariffs two days after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made separate pledges to increase border enforcement efforts.
