Valvian to set up biotechnology center in Óbidos Technology Park

Valvian will install a biotechnology center, focused on production and scientific research, in the Óbidos Technology Park (PTO), the City Council announced today, estimating that the investment will contribute to the creation of dozens of jobs.
In a statement, the Óbidos City Council, which did not disclose the figures, considered it to be “an internationally renowned investment in the area of biotechnology” promoted by Valvian, a startup led by Nuno Prego Ramos.
The company intends to establish a "scientific production and research center with European ambitions in the PTO, reinforcing Portugal's position as a territory of innovation in health, pharmacology, and artificial intelligence," the Chamber announced in a statement.
The project integrates R&D units and an advanced biotechnology production factory, "expecting the creation of dozens of highly qualified jobs and the strengthening of the technological ecosystem in the Western region," the same statement states.
For the mayor of the Leiria district, Filipe Daniel (PSD), the “large-scale” project will have a “direct impact on the national economy, the creation of qualified jobs and the affirmation of Óbidos as a territory of innovation”.
Quoted in the statement, Filipe Daniel believes that "Investing in biotechnology is, obviously, investing in quality of life, in applied research, and in solutions that make a difference in the lives of communities."
The investment, which will be implemented in a set of five lots acquired by Valvian, "confirms the PTO's ability to attract science-based companies with a global vision," said the park's executive director, Miguel Silvestre.
"Valvian's commitment demonstrates that it is possible to develop cutting-edge science and technology outside of major centers, promoting economic development, attracting talent, and innovating with a real impact on society," he added.
On July 11, the Óbidos Technology Park celebrated the 10th anniversary of its central buildings, establishing itself as one of the leading centers of technological innovation in Portugal, promoting the establishment of companies in the areas of digital health, robotics, artificial intelligence, energy, and sustainability.
