Dakota Johnson has been in the spotlight pretty much since birth, as the daughter of Hollywood stars Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson. But her career really exploded when she was cast opposite Jamie Dornan in the Fifty Shades of Grey series. Since then, Johnson has starred in action films, comedies, and more romances, including her most recent role in The Materialists as a matchmaker.

With her success came more interest in her personal life. Johnson has dated a few noted celebrities over the years, with one of her longest relationships ending just this year. Here’s Johnson’s complete dating history do far.

Dakota Johnson and Jordan Masterson started dating around 2012. In March 2014, she told ELLE that Masterson did some home renovation for her as a Christmas present.

“He gave me double sinks!” she shared. “He did it himself. I think double sinks are the key to any relationship.”

Masterson is part of a family of actors, including The Walking Dead’s Alanna Masterson and Danny Masterson, and they are deeply involved in the Church of Scientology. In 2013, the Daily Mail reported that Masterson was uncomfortable with Johnson’s fame associated with the 50 Shades franchise, as well as some of the explicit scenes in the movie, and had encouraged her to get involved with Scientology. There are no other reports on why they may have split.

In July 2014, it was rumored the actress was seeing model and musician Matthew Hitt. Things were a bit off-and-on for the couple, and they seemingly split in December of that year. In April 2015, E! reported they were back together after they were seen in Los Angeles.

In June 2016, E! News confirmed they had split up again, this time for good.

“Dakota and Matthew have dated on-and-off for the past two years,” said a source. “They didn’t get a chance to see much of each other recently because their work schedules didn’t align. She’s been up in Vancouver shooting the Fifty Shades trilogy.”

Johnson was first linked to Coldplay’s Chris Martin in October 2017. They were spotted grabbing dinner at Sushi Park in Los Angeles. According to a People onlooker, the pair appeared “cozy, laughing and affectionate.”

In December, sources confirmed the relationship to Us Weekly, saying, “Dakota and Chris are definitely dating. They’ve gotten to know each other really well and are very comfortable from one another. Chris sends Dakota his music to get her opinion. It’s more than just a fling.”

The couple kept their relationship very private over the next eight years, never walking red carpets together and with very few public appearances side-by-side, though he did join her at events occasionally.

In 2020, Martin’s ex-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, talked about her friendly relationship with Johnson in a cover story interview with Harper's Bazaar.

“I love her,” Paltrow said. “I can see how it would seem weird because it’s sort of unconventional. But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her. I always start to think of the ampersand sign—what else can you bring in, instead of being resistant to or being made insecure by? There’s so much juice in leaning in to something like that.”

In March 2024, Johnson shared rare details about her relationship with Martin and his children in a Bustle interview. She called his son and daughter with Paltrow her stepchildren. “I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart,” she said.

As for Martin, she said that she loves watching him perform: “I love watching him,” she said. “I could watch him every day. I don’t know how to explain it. I feel like, I don’t know... I’m watching my most favorite being do his most favorite thing.”

She added, “When people are really good at things, it is [sexy.]”

A few days later, a source told People that Johnson and Martin had been engaged for some time.

“[They] got engaged years ago but were in no rush to get married,” a source close to the couple said.

Rumors of their relationship being on the rocks circulated in August 2024. On August 16, a source claimed to Daily Mail that Johnson and Martin had broken up.

“Chris and Dakota have tried desperately hard over the past few months to make their relationship work,” the source alleged. “They’ll always have love for each other but they’ve both come to the conclusion the relationship cannot be sustained long-term. They’re both busy people, Chris has been in Europe with Coldplay and they both have personal priorities, passions and work commitments which don’t naturally intertwine with each other. They wanted it to work but it just hasn’t, and they’ve now accepted it is best to move on.”

A rep for the couple denied the statement, saying rumors that they had broken up are “not true,” per E!. “They are happily together.”

In June 2015, multiple sources told People that Martin and Johnson had fully broken up after reports of their relationship still being off-and-on.

An insider said that “it feels final this time.” The sources described their relationship as being “on-off” during its eight-year run.
