Global Teacher Prize for Leiria teacher

Professor José Oliveira won the Global Teacher Prize Portugal this Friday for transforming classrooms into true creative laboratories, having already created screen printing workshops, photography studios and design clubs.

After analyzing more than 150 applications from teachers from preschool to 12th grade, the winner of the 7th edition of the Global Teacher Prize Portugal was announced at MAAT, in Lisbon, and was awarded to José Oliveira, from Escola Secundária Francisco Rodrigues Lobo, in Leiria.

The teacher from Leiria is the first to say that he got into teaching by accident, but that even before that, when he was still a student, he enjoyed teaching his classmates things that their teachers couldn't explain to them. Today, his work has been recognised and he has been awarded a prize of 30 thousand euros.

Throughout his career, which allowed him to teach in several schools, José Oliveira became known for transforming classrooms into true creative laboratories, having already created screen printing workshops, photography studios, design clubs and digital education spaces in several schools across the country.

Through the “See to Learn” project, we try to challenge Descriptive Geometry students to overcome the limits of the program, inventing exercises, collaborating with each other and explaining to their colleagues as a way of consolidating knowledge.

With the prize won today, José Oliveira will invest in technology to democratize access to digital tools in the arts, such as tablets, augmented reality glasses and audiovisual equipment.

The Global Teacher Prize Portugal also awarded an honorable mention to Alfredo José Rosa Gomes, from Manuel Teixeira Gomes Secondary School, in Portimão.

The Portuguese and Theatre/Dramatic Expression teacher has dedicated himself for over three decades to transforming the school into a stage for expression, inclusion and growth. He is the founder of Teatro da Caverna, a school group that has become a reference in Portimão and has had hundreds of students.

Already distinguished with medals of merit and a regular presence in local media, Alfredo Gomes now has this additional award.

The 7th edition of the Global Teacher Prize Portugal saw an increase in the number of participants, with more than 150 candidate teachers with projects as varied as theatre groups or schools to combat school dropout.

Among the finalists were Mathematics teachers who use 'escape rooms' to teach or who created a new school that has already managed to integrate more than half a thousand students at risk of dropping out of school.
