Former Socialist leadership candidate José Luís Carneiro assured this Monday that he will be available to serve the PS and Portugal , considering that the party must carry out “a deep reflection” and open a new cycle, contributing to political stability .

Ready to step forward to lead the PS, José Luís Carneiro supports the viability of the AD Government but rejects the central bloc

“In view of the election results and the decision of the PS secretary-general, I understand that socialist militants must promote deep reflection and open a new cycle that honors the history of the Socialist Party . Counting on everyone and promoting the inclusion, cohesion and unity of the PS, in the richness of its diversity”, can be read in a note sent to the Lusa agency by José Luís Carneiro.

The former Minister of Internal Administration, who about a year and a half ago lost the internal dispute to Pedro Nuno Santos , ends this note with an idea for the future: “as always, I will be available to serve my party and to serve Portugal”.

“It is important for the country that the PS contributes to political stability and the necessary reform drive . The PS will not fail to make a dedicated contribution”, he considered, valuing “sustainable economic growth, decent work, the fight against poverty and inequality” or the strengthening of the NHS or public schools.

For José Luís Carneiro, “we must be firm in defending plurality and peaceful coexistence between everyone, regardless of their convictions” .

“We need to know how to listen and give voice to people and their forms of representation, both within and outside the party framework. Given its historic role in our Democracy, in defending Freedoms and Fundamental Rights, the Socialist Party is and will continue to be the guarantee of a future where security, well-being, dignity for all and the prestige of institutions will continue to be at the heart of our priorities”, he assured.

A word also about the work that the PS must do “to enhance Portugal’s role in the European Union”.

“In addition to serving our country, at a particularly demanding time in Europe and the world, we must put our strength into supporting those who, in the name of the PS values, will be candidates in the next local elections”, he emphasized.
