Mia Threapleton arrived at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday evening for the premiere of The Phoenician Scheme, marking her first appearance at the festival and her first lead role in a feature film. The 24-year-old actress wore a custom emerald-green Oscar de la Renta gown. The strapless silhouette, which featured a voluminous skirt and metallic gold embroidery, was reminiscent of her mother Kate Winslet’s memorable Givenchy look at the 1998 Academy Awards.

Threapleton stars as Sister Liesl in Wes Anderson’s ensemble comedy, which also features Benicio del Toro, Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Hanks. The film follows a European tycoon, played by del Toro, who narrowly survives an assassination attempt and appoints his estranged daughter—Liesl, a nun-in-training—as his successor. As her character navigates inheritance and intrigue, Threapleton steps into a high-profile role after years of steady work across independent films and television, including The Buccaneers and I Am Ruth.

The premiere received an extended standing ovation, with Threapleton seen tearfully smiling during it. Just ahead of Cannes, she reflected on the surreal nature of joining the Anderson film’s cast. “I had to just sit on my hands because I was like, ‘What am I doing here?’” she told The Times, recalling a dinner surrounded by del Toro, Hanks, and Bryan Cranston.

Despite the proximity to her mother’s career, Threapleton has been intent on earning roles independently. “I wanted to do that on my own,” she told the outlet.

The film is Anderson’s fourth to compete at Cannes and will open in select U.S. theaters on May 30, with a wider release to follow in June.
