Movie theaters surpass one million spectators mark in April

In April, Portuguese cinemas surpassed the one million spectator mark, which represents an increase of 58% compared to the same month in 2024, according to data released today by the Cinema and Audiovisual Institute (ICA).

Comparing only the month of April, the number of spectators recorded – 1,006,263 – is only similar before the Covid-19 pandemic, when in April 2019 the ICA recorded 1,538,195 entries.

In terms of box office revenue, last April cinema visits generated 6.3 million euros, an increase of 62% compared to April 2024.

In the four months of this year, commercial cinema exhibition totaled 23 million euros at the box office and 3.6 million spectators, which represents an increase of 12% and 9.6%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2024.

“A Minecraft Movie”, by Jared Hess, released on April 3, was the most watched film that month and also in the four-month period, which will have contributed to the increases recorded, as it obtained 433,624 spectators and 2.7 million euros at the box office.

“On Falling”, by Laura Carreira, remains the most-watched Portuguese film this year in theaters, with 11,493 admissions and around 70 thousand euros in box office revenue.

Of the total number of films shown this year on the commercial circuit, Portuguese cinema was seen by 36,610 spectators (with a market share of 1%) and obtained 170,667 euros in revenue (0.7% of the market share).
