CNI asks the government to negotiate with the US to postpone tariffs for 90 days

The National Confederation of Industry (CNI) requested late Monday afternoon (14) that the Brazilian government intercede with the United States to obtain a minimum 90-day postponement in the application of the 50% tariffs, announced by President Donald Trump, on Brazilian products.
The request was formalized during a virtual meeting called by the president of the CNI, Ricardo Alban, with the participation of the secretary of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC), Tatiana Lacerda Prazeres, and the presidents of industrial federations from across the country.
Initiative would serve to evaluate details of tariffs in industrial sectorsThe initiative would grant the industry additional time to thoroughly assess the effects of the tariff measure and seek diplomatic solutions to mitigate its impact. The tariff hike, announced by the U.S. government last week, is scheduled to take effect on August 1st, according to a letter sent by U.S. President Donald Trump via social media to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, but has not yet been published in an executive order.
Representatives from the manufacturing sector say the 90-day delay is crucial to avoid significant losses: preliminary estimates indicate a possible reduction of 110,000 jobs and a negative impact on Brazil's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) if the tariffs are implemented as planned. Experts estimate a GDP decline of between 0.3% in 2025 and 0.5% in 2026.
Government will hold meetings with industry and agriculture sectors this TuesdaySecretary Tatiana Prazeres reported that the CNI's considerations will be forwarded to the federal government to guide diplomatic negotiations. The request comes at a time when President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has created the Interministerial Committee for Negotiations and Economic and Trade Countermeasures, which will coordinate Brazil's actions in response to the tariff hike. This Tuesday (15), Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, coordinator of the Committee, will hold meetings on the impact of the tariff hike with industrial sectors and, subsequently, with agribusiness.
