Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Thursday that the West is waging an "all-out war" against Russia and that Moscow must respond "in full" and, if necessary, with preemptive strikes.
In statements cited by the Russian state news agency TASS, Medvedev, currently deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, said the conflict had already surpassed the level of a proxy war.
It's a full-scale war: Western missiles, satellite intelligence, successive sanctions, militarization of Europe,” he listed.
In his view, this offensive aims to “destroy the historical anomaly hated by the West — Russia.”
According to Medvedev, the West has been trying to weaken Moscow for centuries, and its leaders act out of “betrayal in their blood” and an “outdated superiority complex.”
Medvedev's speech is seen by diplomats as a reflection of thinking in certain circles of Russian power, especially among the most hardline sectors of the regime.
