Thieves rob mansion in Morumbi and take hostages; estimated loss is R$3 million

Six people, including an elderly couple, were taken hostage during a robbery at a mansion in Morumbi, in the southern part of the capital, in the early hours of Tuesday, the 24th. The damage is estimated at R$3 million. The bandits fled and have not yet been identified by the police.
According to the police report filed with the Civil Police, four armed men invaded the property, jumping over the back wall, and held the elderly couple who own the mansion hostage – a 71-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman. Their hands were tied and they were locked in a room. A security guard and three other employees of the house were also held hostage.
The thieves took jewelry, watches, 2 thousand euros (around R$ 12,800) and 2 thousand dollars (approximately R$ 11 thousand). The total loss, according to the victims registered in the police report, was R$ 3 million.
After the criminals fled, one of the victims managed to free himself and let the others go. Only then were the Military Police called, but they were unable to locate the assailants.
The case was registered as a home robbery at the 89th Police District (Morumbi). The Civil Police are working to identify the criminals.
Morumbi is the region of São Paulo with the most home robberies
As Estadão showed, Morumbi was the region that recorded the most home robberies in the 1st quarter, according to a survey carried out based on microdata made available by the State Public Security Secretariat (SSP).
There were 9 cases registered from January to March, two fewer than in the same period in 2024, when the region – characterized by high-end homes – was already at the top of the list.
Recent cases are frightening, especially because of the violence. In April, at least five bandits armed with pistols and rifles held a security guard, doorman and other employees hostage after entering a house on Rua General José Scarcela Portela, in Morumbi.
The robbery resulted in at least R$1 million in losses. Around 13 luxury watches were stolen - seven of them Rolex and three Patek Philippe. The hooded bandits also stole jewelry and US$5,000 (almost R$30,000) in cash. The group fled at around 6:30 a.m.
