Find out which plant is best for keeping yellow scorpions away from your home.

Find out which plant is best for keeping yellow scorpions away from your home.

Due to the toxic venom of yellow scorpions , their stings are harmful to human health, affecting the nervous system and causing everything from intense pain to serious complications —especially in children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions. However, using a certain plant at home can help ward them off.

During rainy seasons, yellow scorpions appear more frequently due to the humidity in the air, which also increases the availability of insects, the arachnids' prey. According to biologist Danilo Dantas, the rains also flood their hiding places, forcing them out.

Among all the plants that can help ward off these animals, the expert recommends peppermint, as it has a strong repellent effect . "It's the most promising for indirectly repelling yellow scorpions, although no plant has been scientifically proven to repel them directly," he ponders.

According to the expert, mint repels cockroaches, crickets, mosquitoes, and ants because it contains essential oils such as menthol and pulegone . By inhibiting the presence of these prey, which are food sources for yellow scorpions, the plant indirectly repels the arachnids.

Ideally, the species should be planted in pots near doors, windows, or humid areas. Dantas also suggests using essential oil diluted in water (10 drops in 500 ml) to spray baseboards and crevices.

However, the biologist warns: mint doesn't directly kill or even scare away scorpions; it simply creates a less attractive environment . "Care requires reinforcement. You need to reapply the oil and maintain the plant," he advises.

Other care

Using mint helps, but the ideal is to maintain a set of actions. Yards need to be clean, as well as gardens and surrounding areas. The biologist advises avoiding the accumulation of debris, wood, and dry leaves . To reinforce these measures, the expert also recommends: "Use screens on drains and seal doors and windows. And always shake out clothes and shoes before using them."

Just like rain, debris is a strong attraction for scorpions, and it is even recommended to contact the health department if neighbors keep accumulated garbage.

Dantas also advises: in cases of stings, it's best to wash the area with soap and water, keeping the victim calm and avoiding movement of the affected limb. "Don't apply tourniquets, cut, or suck out the venom; seek medical attention immediately. Anti-scorpion serum is effective and should be administered as soon as possible," he emphasizes.
