BRICS condemns attacks on Iran and defends nuclear-free zone in the Middle East

In a joint statement released on Tuesday, the BRICS countries urgently called for “breaking the cycle of violence” in the Middle East, following the attacks by Israel and the United States against Iran . The statement also proposed the creation of a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East.
“We call on all parties involved to engage, through existing dialogue and diplomatic channels, with a view to de-escalating the situation and resolving their differences through peaceful means,” says the text from the bloc – currently chaired by Brazil – which includes Iran .
Currently, the bloc of emerging countries is made up of 11 member countries: South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, China, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia, India, Iran and Russia.
According to the statement, BRICS “remains committed to promoting international peace and security and fostering diplomacy and peaceful dialogue as the only sustainable path to lasting stability in the region.”
The statement comes amid a fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel, after 12 days of a war launched by the Israeli army under the pretext of preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
Israel accepted the truce proposed by the United States, but warned that the campaign against Iran “is not over.” As for Iran, its government proclaimed “the end of the 12-day war imposed” by Israel.
