José Carlos Rolo is running again for mayor of Albufeira

Social Democrat José Carlos Rolo will run for a second term as mayor of Albufeira , in the Faro district, to “guarantee the stability and development” of the municipality, the mayor said today.
José Carlos Rolo, 69, leads the list of the “Ser Albufeira” coalition, which brings together PSD and CDS-PP, in the October local elections, aiming to maintain the presidency of the municipality that the PSD won from the PS in 2001.
"My re-election is intended to continue the work carried out by the PSD for over 20 years, and to make the municipality increasingly better, both for residents and for tourism," the mayor explained.
Born in Belver, in the municipality of Gavião, in the district of Portalegre, and resident in Albufeira for over 40 years, José Carlos Rolo has a degree in Mathematics, a master's degree in Management and Public Policy, and a career in education, having taught at secondary schools in Loulé and Albufeira.
After being elected president of the board of directors of Albufeira Secondary School in 1986 and holding the position for more than a decade, he was director of services at the Algarve Regional Education Directorate, before joining the Albufeira municipality as a councilor and vice-president in 2001, when Desidério Silva (PSD) won the presidency of the municipality from the PS.
In 2012, he took over the presidency of the municipality for the first time for about a year, following the resignation of Desidério Silva to run for president of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA), but he maintained second place on the list in the 2013 and 2017 local elections, years in which Carlos Silva e Sousa was elected to the presidency, who won an absolute majority of the executive, with four of the seven elected.
José Carlos Rolo returned to the presidency of the municipality after the death of Carlos Silva e Sousa in 2018, remaining in office since then, after having led the list of the PSD/CDS-PP/MPT/PPM coalition and won the elections in 2021, but losing the majority of those elected.
Currently, the Albufeira City Council executive is made up of three elected members from the PSD/CDS-PP/MPT/PPM, two from the PS, one from the Independent Movement for Albufeira (MIPA) and one from the Independent Movement Albufeira Prometida (AP).
José Carlos Rolo already has a known opponent in the race for the leadership of the municipality, Miguel Matias from the Liberal Initiative (IL).
The local elections are scheduled for October 12th.
