Oeiras remains the municipality with the highest income

Oeiras, in the district of Lisbon, was the municipality where the value of income in 2023 was highest, as was the case in 2022, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) announced this Friday.
According to the Local Income Statistics, an annual document that covers gross income declared to the tax authorities , less the IRS paid to the State by the taxpayer, this value, in 2023, stood at 15,862 euros in Oeiras (672 euros more than in 2022).
In Portugal, the median net income per person was 11,446 euros — an increase of 767 euros compared to 10,679 euros in 2022 — and the same data indicate that a total of 71 municipalities, one more than in 2022, presented values above the national reference.
The top five municipalities with the highest income values in 2023 did not change their position compared to the previous year: in addition to Oeiras, Lisbon occupies second place (14,282, up 473 euros), followed by Alcochete (13,654, up 780 euros compared to 2022), Cascais (13,406 euros, up 563 euros) and Coimbra (13,241, up 684 euros).
The INE, however, highlights two other municipalities with values above 13,000 euros: Porto Santo, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (13,089), and Évora (13,003 euros).
The same document states that, in all municipalities, with the exception of Odemira, on the Alentejo coast , the median value of net income per person increased (which had already happened in 2022 compared to 2021) and in 137 of the municipalities the increase was higher than that of the country.
“Between 2022 and 2023 there was an increase in the annual rate of change in the median income value in 66% of municipalities” , highlights the INE, specifying a number of 197 municipalities out of the 298 with available information.
The municipal portrait , which includes the 71 municipalities with values above the national reference , includes all nine municipalities in Greater Lisbon and the Setúbal Peninsula, 17 municipalities in the Center, 10 in the West and Tagus Valley, eight in the Alentejo region, eight in the North, six in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, three in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, and Faro, in the Algarve. The municipalities with values below 10,000 euros are located mainly in the interior of the North region .
In the Porto Metropolitan Area , still according to the INE, and also following the example of 2022, three contiguous municipalities stand out, “due to the high median values observed”: Maia (12,726 euros), Porto (12,460) and Matosinhos (12,266 euros) .
By sub-regions, eight of the 26 were above the national reference: Greater Lisbon (12,943 euros), Setúbal Peninsula (12,401), Autonomous Region of Madeira (11,715), Coimbra Region (11,691), Autonomous Region of the Azores (11,660), Aveiro Region (11,593), Leiria Region (11,587) and Central Alentejo (11,567 euros).
The sub-regions of Alto Tâmega e Barroso (9,449 euros) and Tâmega e Sousa (9,819 euros) had the lowest median incomes, below 10,000 euros per person.
