Bayern and PSG battle for survival in the European bracket of the Club World Cup

Bayern and PSG battle for survival in the European bracket of the Club World Cup

The Club World Cup will feature a Champions League duel this Saturday at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, where Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain will face off in the quarter-finals. Starting at 1 pm (Brasília time), the two teams will decide which of them survives on the 100% European side of the bracket. The one that advances will face the winner of Real Madrid vs. Borussia Dortmund, scheduled for 5 pm.

Bayern and PSG last faced each other in November 2024, during the first round of the Champions League, which the French team later won. The Bavarians won 1-0, with a goal from Kim Min-Jae, and added their fourth consecutive victory in duels against the Parisians, who have not beaten the Germans since the 3-2 first leg of the 2021 Champions League quarter-finals.

At the time of their last triumph, the French team still had Neymar and Mbappé in their squad, who were also on the pitch in the biggest clash ever between Bayern and PSG. In 2020, the superstar duo helped the Parisians reach an unprecedented final of Europe's top tournament, but the Munich team won 1-0 and were crowned champions.

"One thing is for sure: when Bayern face Paris, a spectacle is expected. Both teams are in good form and confident of fighting for a place in the semi-finals," commented Bavarian goalkeeper Neuer, when analyzing the recent history of the clashes.

Today, with a less popular squad and under the command of Spaniard Luis Enrique, Paris Saint-Germain arrived at the Club World Cup as the current European champion and suffered its only setback in the FIFA tournament when it lost to Botafogo during the group stage, in which it also beat Atlético de Madrid 4-0 and Seattle Sounders 2-0. It then thrashed Inter Miami, led by Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez, 4-0.

Bayern, in turn, only lost to Benfica, 1-0, after beating Auckland 10-0 and Boca Juniors 1-0. In the round of 16, they saw Flamengo impose some difficulties, but showed superiority and won 4-2 to send the Rio de Janeiro team home.

Although there is debate as to whether the Europeans will give due value if the Old Continent wins the new world title, the public discourse of the teams is that they give great importance to the FIFA tournament. "We are having a historic season for our club and we want to extend it in this competition," said Luis Enrique.

There will be a melancholy tone on the pitch, however, after the death of Liverpool's Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva in a car accident. Both PSG and Bayern observed a minute's silence during training on Thursday, the day of the fatal accident.

For Parisians, the mourning is deeper, as players Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, João Neves and Gonçalo Ramos are compatriots of Jota and won the European Nations League with him just a month ago.
