On Monday, October 27, the remains of a 67-year-old man were discovered in the garden of his home in Ichinoseki. Japan's Ministry of the Environment confirmed he was attacked by a bear. He is the 11th bear attack victim in Japan since April.
According to NHK research, 84 people have been injured in bear attacks in the country since the beginning of October alone. Six Japanese people were mauled by the animals. The previous fatal bear attack on a person in Japan occurred on Friday, October 24, in Akita Prefecture .
The year 2025 marked a record for bear attacks in Japan. Eleven people fell victim to bears, a record high. An increase in bear attacks has been recorded across Japan in recent years. Experts attribute this phenomenon to a range of factors, from a decline in hunters to unusual weather conditions in the region.
Earlier, the governor of Akita Prefecture, where the highest number of predator attacks are recorded, called for assistance from the Japanese military. He stated that the local emergency services had reached their limit.
