Novgorod oncology surgeons removed a tumor and reconstructed a woman's breast

Surgeons from the Novgorod Regional Clinical Oncology Center simultaneously removed a breast tumor and installed an implant. Their patient was a 40-year-old woman who had previously undergone courses of drug therapy. The operation was the next stage of treatment. And the aesthetic intervention allowed solving a delicate issue for many women facing such a difficult situation.
The operation was performed by the head of the department of breast tumors and skin tumors of the NOKOD Boris Frumkin and the head of the day hospital of the surgical profile of the institution Yulia Saltykova.
About 350 breast cancer surgeries are usually performed at the Novgorod Oncology Center per year. About 70% of them are organ-preserving, including sentinel lymph node biopsy. Specialists explain: if a tumor is detected early, patients can preserve their breasts and, if necessary, continue treatment with medication or radiation therapy. However, when the process spreads, the mammary gland often has to be removed. And here the question of aesthetics arises. A woman decides in advance with her surgeon whether to install an implant during the operation or not. If a positive decision is made, then a suitable implant can be purchased free of charge under the compulsory medical insurance.
However, breast reconstruction surgery is not indicated in all cases, and the patients themselves do not always agree to it.
"It is much more difficult to perform such an operation, it takes longer. The risk of complications increases, because the body has to adapt to the implant," comment the specialists of NOKOD.
But in this patient's case, everything went well. In the near future, the woman will undergo the same treatment as after the tumor removal surgery.
As Boris Frumkin explained, the Novgorod woman will undergo a course of hormone therapy, and then regular examinations and observation by a doctor. In addition, the woman needs to pay close attention to her health and adhere to certain restrictions.
As noted by the medical institution, the fight against oncological diseases is one of the priority areas of the national project “Long and Active Life”.
