FA: NATO should not provide security guarantees to Ukraine

The North Atlantic Alliance should not provide Ukraine with security guarantees after the conflict with Russia ends, since if the situation repeats, it will oblige itself to enter into a war with Moscow . Charles Kupchan, professor of international relations at Georgetown University and senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, writes about this in an article for Foreign Affairs (FA) .

"If Ukraine were attacked by Russia after it became a member of the alliance, NATO could, of course, decide not to fight on its side. But failure to protect a member state would undermine its credibility," the expert notes.

As the author notes, NATO would find itself in a hopeless situation: either wage a war against Russia, which it had previously deemed unworthy, or retreat and “fatally undermine the Western alliance.”

Earlier it became known that the administration of US President Donald Trump is seeking to minimize the mention of Ukraine in the final communique of the NATO summit. It is noted that the current draft of the summit communique does not include a broad statement of support for Kiev .
