Former Tulun City Duma deputy Sergei Romanenko has been sentenced to two years of suspended imprisonment for attempted fraud on an especially large scale. The court found that he attempted to illegally obtain two apartments from the state housing stock worth a total of 6.5 million rubles. This was reported by the Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Irkutsk Region.

According to investigators, in 2020, Romanenko, together with an official of the Tulun administration, through the court executed fictitious social rental agreements for apartments in a dilapidated building damaged by the 2019 flood. He then submitted false documents to the regional Ministry of Construction so that he would be included in the queue to receive new housing to replace the one he allegedly lost. The criminal scheme was uncovered before the apartments became his property.

Romanenko admitted guilt and entered into a pre-trial cooperation agreement. In addition to the suspended sentence, the court imposed a fine of 100 thousand rubles on him. The criminal case against the mayor of Tulun and other defendants continues to be investigated.

Let us recall that in 2019, the Irkutsk region, especially the city of Tulun, was seriously damaged by a large-scale flood. A federal program was launched to help the victims, including the construction of new housing.

Earlier it was reported that the leaders of the Picket Group received a prison term for illegal banking activities.
