Special telescopic pins were used by doctors at the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital to treat a "crystal" child. The 11-year-old resident of the Samara Region suffered from osteogenesis imperfecta from birth.

As reported to MK by the RDKB, the child was constantly injured, but the diagnosis was made after an incident with his leg. The boy broke his shin, took a long time to recover, but as soon as he took off the plaster cast and took a few steps, the same bone was fractured.

The doctors made a diagnosis and decided to install a telescopic pin. This can only be done in a perfectly straight bone, but the tibia was severely deformed. It had to be broken again and fused along a straight axis.

In the future, the pin, which consists of two parts, will lengthen along with the bone in addition to the child’s growth.
