The US state of California has been sued over rising egg prices. The lawsuit was filed by the US Department of Justice, the agency reported.
The US Justice Department said that "California's laws create burdensome red tape that has driven up egg prices across the country."
"The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against the State of California, Governor Gavin Newsom, and other state officials over California laws that impose burdensome red tape on the egg and poultry industry," the department said in a statement.
The department added that California laws prohibit farmers across the country from using farming practices that have previously helped keep egg prices affordable.
Earlier it was reported that 1.7 million egg packages would be destroyed in the US due to the threat of salmonella contamination .
