This includes WHO, UNESCO and peacekeeping missions.
US President Donald Trump proposes to suspend most contributions to UN structures, including WHO and UNESCO. This is reported in the explanatory note to the White House budget draft for the next fiscal year. It follows from it that the reduction will amount to $1.7 billion, TASS reports .
“The budget suspends most mandatory and all voluntary contributions to the UN and other international organizations, including the regular budget of the UN, UNESCO and WHO,” the document, quoted by RIA Novosti, says.
In addition, the American leader proposed to completely stop funding UN peacekeeping operations. This would save another $1.6 billion.
“The budget does not provide funding for ineffective UN and other peacekeeping missions due to recent failures and high costs of participation,” the draft says.
It notes that the United States has historically paid a disproportionate share of international peacekeeping costs, but this practice is no longer in the country's interests.
