Study: AI helps reduce costs for healthcare organizations

In total, analysts surveyed representatives of 2.3 thousand organizations. According to the study, among organizations using research and development in the field of AI, only 2.1% are related to healthcare, but the costs of research and development in this area make up a tenth of the total volume - 10.7%. The bulk of spending on research and development is provided by scientific organizations and higher education organizations - 50.2% and 21.9%, respectively.

The researchers found that 10.7% of healthcare workers are AI-competent, of which 10.3% are neural network workers and 0.4% are representatives of other professions that use AI technologies to solve work problems. At the same time, the industry has recorded difficulties in hiring specialized specialists. This problem was noted in 34.9% of the medical organizations studied. A lack of skills among workers was noted by 39.8%, and 38.6% indicated a lack of funds to attract qualified personnel.

The structure of admission, the number of students and graduation in the bachelor's, specialist and master's degree programs with a module on artificial intelligence has also changed. In the profile integrated into healthcare, 8.3% of the total number of such students began training. As of November 2023, there were 9.8% of students, and 9.7% in the graduate category.

According to the plan of the surveyed medical institutions, in the next few years, the number of AI efficiency enhancement technologies will increase by 31.3%, the number of intelligent decision support and management technologies will increase by 26.5%, the number of audio data processing technologies will increase by 15.7%, the number of text processing technologies will increase by 20.5%, and the number of visual data processing technologies will increase by 12%.

In March 2025, the Russian Ministry of Health approved the Code of Ethics for the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare. The document's stated main objective is to define the rights and obligations of AI subjects, as well as mechanisms for regulating the application of the code. Vademecum spoke with developers of thematic AI solutions, representatives of the medical community and medical universities, inviting experts to assess the practical significance of the new regulation for the development of the healthcare industry.
