Danish scientists Sigrid Gribsholt and Meldgard Bruhn concluded that a body mass index (BMI) corresponding to excess weight does not pose a significant risk to life expectancy compared to a normal weight. At the same time, the scientists concluded that thinness, like obesity, can reduce life expectancy.
Danish scientists found that people with a body mass index below 18.5 had a roughly threefold higher risk of premature death than those with a body mass index between 22.5 and 24.9 (the upper limit of normal). Even those with a weight close to the lower limit of the generally accepted normal range had a slightly higher risk. The risk was also high for people with a BMI over 40, but comparatively low for those with a BMI not significantly above 25.
Scientists suggest that in some cases, excess weight, that is, a moderate amount of fat tissue, may bring some benefit.
