Women's Day, or International Working Women's Day in other common usage, is celebrated every year on March 8. In fact, the name of the day is often referred to as "March 8 International Women's Day". This year, in 2025, March 8 International Women's Day falls on a Saturday.

THE STORY OF THE EMERGENCE OF MARCH 8, INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
At the International Socialist Women's Conference affiliated with the 2nd International held in Copenhagen, Denmark on 26-27 August 1910, the proposal of Clara Zetkin and Kate Duncker, delegates of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, to organize an annual "Women's Day" was accepted.

On March 8, 1857, 40,000 textile workers in New York, USA, went on strike in a textile factory demanding better working conditions. During this strike, the police attacked the workers and locked them in the factory. After the workers were locked in the factory, a fire broke out and 129 workers, mostly women, died as a result of the workers being unable to escape from the barricades set up in front of the factory. More than 100,000 people attended the funeral of the dead workers.

WHAT HAPPENED ON MARCH 8?
On March 8, 1857, police locked the doors on striking workers in a textile factory in New York. Unable to escape the fire that broke out in the factory, 120 women lost their lives. On March 8, 1908, a rally was held in New York, led by women workers, most of whom were socialists, demanding union rights and women's suffrage.
According to the Julian calendar used by the Russians at the time, the uprisings that ended Tsarism in Russia began on February 23, 1917. During the uprisings, women also protested and went on strike. February 23 corresponds to March 8 according to the Gregorian calendar.

International Women's Day did not become official until 1977. On December 16, 1977, the United Nations General Assembly accepted that March 8 should be commemorated as International Women's Day, based on the uprisings that went down in history as the February Revolution of 1917.
