Adana Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Zeydan Karalar , who was arrested as part of operations targeting CHP municipalities, answered the questions of Sözcü columnist İpek Özbey from Silivri Prison.
Karalar stated that the government's efforts to wear down the CHP have backfired, saying, "Turkey is experiencing an environment it has never experienced before. They are trying to discredit a party that is progressing and on its way to power. But because the methods employed are unconvincing, the opposite is working against the CHP."
Detained on July 5, Karalar was arrested on July 8 and sent to Silivri Prison. On July 9, he was suspended from his post by the Ministry of Interior.
In his statement from prison, Karalar pointed out that the process was not only a legal operation but also a political one.
"Türkiye IS LIVING IN AN ENVIRONMENT IT HAS NEVER EXPERIENCED"Criticizing both the targeting of CHP executives and emphasizing that the process strengthened solidarity within the party, Karalar said:
Turkey is experiencing an environment it has never experienced before. They are trying to discredit a party that was progressing and marching towards power. But because the methods employed are unconvincing, they are actually benefiting the CHP. These injustices are further uniting and unifying CHP members. You take Zeydan Karalar, who spent years in high-level management, who selflessly served his country as mayor for 12 years, and who is also the President of the Union of Municipalities of Turkey, from his home (I was at my sister's house) early in the morning and keep him in an unhealthy environment for four days. For God's sake, which of our mayors have you summoned? Who hasn't come and testified, and who won't? This practice is unacceptable.
